Media Studies

Media Studies Engages, Enlightens and Encourages students within and beyond the classroom.

Introduction

The Media Studies department has now grown to include Moving Image Arts at GCSE level.

We currently teach 1 Media class and 1 Moving Image Arts class in Year 11 and 1 class of each subject in Year 12. There is also an A level class in Years 13 and 14.

Key Stage 3

Media Studies is not offered at KS3.

Key Stage 4

The AQA GCSE Media Studies course is one which contains engaging and relevant topics which inspire and motivate students. It is a contemporary and interactive subject which encourages students to develop their creative, analytical, research and communication skills. The course is also very relevant to students’ lives and provides opportunities for them to explore contemporary issues through the different media in practical and creative ways.

The course also bridges the gap between GCSE and AS level, preparing students for the demands of KS5 Media if they choose to progress with their study of the subject.

The CCEA GCSE Moving Image Arts course provides students with the opportunity to work on a range of tasks, including planning and creating a range of moving image products. Learners will also develop an understanding of film language in theory and practice and learn about the film industry and production aspects. Students study a range of film genre and learn the skills of camera and editing, sound production and animation.

Key Stage 5

With the growing television and film industry in N Ireland, WJEC A level Media Studies equips students with a broad range of knowledge and skills which would be beneficial in the following careers: TV/film producer, advertising, events organiser, public relations officer, social media manager, media planner, magazine journalist, film maker amongst many others.

The A Level course covers the in-depth study of a range of media industries including:

• Advertising and Music Videos
• News in an online age
• Film Industry
• Magazines

• Television in a Global Age

Students will also learn the skills required to create media productions such as film promotional materials and magazines.
